The Invasion by K.A. Applegate (Book 1 Animorphs)
Continuing our series on middle-grade fiction, we discuss many readers’ first science fiction book: The Invasion, book one of the Animorphs series. The series follows a collection of young adults as they are forced on a mission to save the world from brain-controlling slugs! The ability these youngsters have to fight off these aliens is the ability to morph, to change.
The Invasion (Animorphs book 1) is the second book in our series of young speculative fiction, join us in two weeks when we discuss The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket.
- Narrative voice. The Invasion is first person within the head of Jake, the often described leader of the group of Animorphs. The jarring nature of the voice in Jake’s head, quasi-journal and quasi-inner monologue leads a different type of taste in Reid and Isaac’s memory.
- Succinct Plot. In a short number of words the world building, conflict, setting, and characters are set up and ready to be explored for the remainder of the series.
- Consequences. Actions have consequences in this series, and that no character is immune from their actions. Actions done by these characters actually change and interact with the world around them.
